Success Stories in Oil & Gas Consulting

Developed onshore oil field with pumping units, wellheads, tankage, and gathering infrastructure

Buy-Side Asset Evaluation

Determined market value of a marketed asset with a very narrow buyer universe. Asset was cash flow positive but with substantial near-term abandonment liabilities. Fully characterized the value of the property in the current operator’s ownership.

Noted the emergence of an unusual horizontal drilling campaign in the area and of synergies with the potential buyer’s nearby properties. Delivered a full-cycle valuation enabling the bidder to successfully take down the asset and enlarge their project queue.

Project and Portfolio Economic Analysis

Created exploration portfolio with sizing, risking, and full-field probabilistic exploration and development models. Successfully secured promoted capital and enabled operator de-risking of portfolio.

Pumping unit and wellhead with production forecasting and valuation charts

Reserves Estimation

Assigned a large late-life tight gas field with reserves booked to an economic limit with no consideration of loading rates.

When reserves revisions became apparent, developed a type-curve based approach for probabilistic estimation of the performance impact and validated the approach over two reserves cycles over two years.

Petroleum engineer reviewing machine-learning production analytics

Special Projects and Machine Learning

Investigated and optimized a stimulation workflow for a legacy, high-well count field. Mapped and corrected issues with current process resulting in loss of value. Rewrote and redeployed an autonomous neural net for candidate selection and optimization. Delivered substantial production uplift with zero spend.

Reservoir engineer analyzing families of production and pressure curves

Reservoir Performance Analysis

Studied a large, deep structure in a major producing province with very few well penetrations and a patchwork of seismic coverage. Industry belief was that the drive mechanism was depletion drive due to a lack of water production.

Reviewed available well data and noted that reservoir pressures implied a tank size exceeding all possible geologic interpretations and that the well experienced mechanical failure before aquifer arrival.

Sell-Side Asset Evaluation

Reconfigured a widely-spaced waterflood property with historically poor recoveries. Added 10.5 MMBO reserves in economically attractive upside cases, with the property ultimately selling for higher than market value due to the well-documented upside.

The buyer implemented the reconfiguration plans presented in the data room with strong results.

Petroleum engineer giving expert testimony at a regulatory hearing

Expert Testimony

Qualified and testified before the Texas Railroad Commission on several occasions. Secured an operator’s rights to surface access, usage, and future activity in an area with rapid surface build-out. Also enabled another operator to modernize field rules in a legacy field to permit drilling horizontal wells to chase a newly identified conventional play for in-field redevelopment.

Pumpjacks operating in an oil field

Artificial Lift Design

Experienced with rod pump design, pump-off controllers, gas lift design and troubleshooting, progressing cavity pump design and operation, and software suites associated with each.

Proposed and deployed a multi-thousand pump-off controller project with substantial energy savings to the operator with zero production loss. Further, optimized controller settings on previously deployed controllers with substantial production uplift.
